Until the show's producers throw a wrench in their hopeful plans that will compromise everything Charlotte and Eli have worked so hard for.

      Ohlert (To Get to the Other Side) charms with a whip-smart second-chance romance set against the backdrop of a trivia game show. Charlotte Evans has always dreamed of competing on Brain Battle—and the call that she’s been chosen comes at the perfect time. Her grandmother is ill and struggling with medical bills; if Charlotte wins, the prize money will be put to good use. Eli Collins could similarly use the money. He’s had a hard life: his mother abandoned him when he was a teenager, and his father was arrested shortly thereafter, forcing him to fend for himself. Amid that trauma, he broke up with his first love, Charlotte, without explanation. Now, 13 years later, the two are reunited on the set of Brain Battle, where they’re paired as teammates. Their old flame convincingly rekindles as they study for the show and open up about their families. There’s been a recent slew of reality TV romances, but most feature cooking competitions or home renovation, setting Ohlert’s Jeopardy!-inspired outing apart. She makes Brain Battle feel both fun and high-stakes, using it as a vehicle to bring the well-matched central couple together—and possibly to tear them apart again. Readers will be hooked.       For Charlotte, trivia is a family tradition, and winning one of her favorite quiz shows, Brain Battle, would help her pay for much-needed medical care for her grandmother. At a Brain Battle audition, she is shocked to run into Eli, the ex who broke her heart 12 years ago. Even worse, they get paired as contestants. Although they've been forced together, their friendship is soon rekindled, and Brain Battle's viewers love their will they/won't they tension. When the show's producers offer to feed them answers to keep the ratings-boosting relationship on air, Charlotte is aghast, but Eli is in a bind, forced to choose between protecting his family or breaking Charlotte's heart once more. Ohlert (To Get to the Other Side) crafts an uplifting rom-com. The present-day banter is engaging, and the love scenes are steamy, but the backstory doesn't build sufficient chemistry. Narrators Erin Bennett and Tim Lounibos are an incongruous pair. Lounibos sounds older than Eli's 30 years, and his supporting characters are oddly cartoonish. Bennett, however, is well matched to the friendly, funny Charlotte. VERDICT Though not without flaws, this audiobook will appeal to listeners seeking a contemporary second-chance romance about trivia and trust. Recommended for fans of Lyssa Kay Adams and Tessa Bailey.--Lauren Hackert
