Levine (history, Univ. of Illinois) does an exceptional job of researching the effects of the Civil War on the American South. His research includes interviews with everyone from slaves to the president of the Confederacy, providing a brilliant cross-section of the population of both Southerners and Northerners. The author discusses the differences between those in the Upper and Deep South and the differences between the "planter class" and poor farmers without slaves. Peter Jay Fernandez's narration is noteworthy for his excellent use of Southern accents to convey strong emotions. VERDICT Recommended, especially for those interested in sociology, politics, and American history. Should be especially popular given the recent cinematic attention being paid to the American Civil War.
