The bard's sonnets read by a leading actor of stage and screen Simon Callow. Savor the most celebrated love poems in the English language. Written almost 400 years ago, the sonnets of William Shakespeare are passionate and exalted, rich in imagery and alliteration, and full of mystery and intrigue. This selection presents all 154 sonnets composed from 1593-1601. In words and rhyme, he reveals his infatuation with the "Dark Lady," his relationship with a rival poet, and his private thoughts on love, death, beauty, and truth: timeless themes that span the centuries to touch our hearts today.

Simon Callow performs, rather than simply reads, Shakespeare's sonnets, changing tone and expression to fit thought and emotion, bringing the poems to life as if they were a character's lines. The program is unadorned, without music or voicing, letting the listener enjoy the poetry without distraction. What seems an occasional flaw in Callow's otherwise impeccable reading, a "dost" where a "doth" should be, may be textual variants. It will be difficult, however, for a listener unfamiliar with these dense, allusive poems to absorb them from this fine program alone, or even following a text. It would best serve as a refresher, or as an aid to a new reader or student. W.M. (c) AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine

Rich in melody and wordplay, Shakespeare's sonnets are, of all his work, the best-suited to audio production--while also the most demanding in vocal delivery and interpretation. Woven through the sonnets, though in no organized or consecutive manner, is the most amazing personal story, a love triangle that's funny, shocking and weird--baring, or seeming to, the author's most intimate secrets. Right now some very good audio versions of the sonnets are available. The sonnets weren't written to be intimate, but insinuating, and the voice they call for is both frank and playful--not whining, but robust, humorous, sly. Best in that regard is Dover's SHAKESPEAR'S SONNETS in the Listen and Read series of a single cassette with an unabridged paperback. Brian Murray reads with the kind of butch bravado and whiskey gravel that you feel Shakespeare himself would have voiced in his poems. The selection is excellent, and Murray packs a lot of sonnets onto a single tape. At $6.95 for book and cassette, this is one of the best audiobook bargains on the market. D.W.
