Well aware of the American obsession with lists, leading dietician Grotto has compiled this index of top foods, designed to showcase individual foodsâ particular benefits. He arranged lists in dozens of categories: by nutrient content, by body part, even by specific ailments (from black beans and black raspberries for breast cancer to carrot juiceâs superiority in maintaining gum health). Beyond the many lists, readers will find an objective and highly readable cornucopia of advice and information as Grotto briefly explains why each food is a valuable addition to oneâs diet and he outlines how understanding the mechanisms of specific health problems is central to his approach. Readers will find real answers about the nutrient content of all kinds of readily available foods, become aware of surprisingly healthy "shocker foods," and emerge more educated about foodâs health benefitsââwhether theyâre new to choosing healthier foods or not. This exhaustively researched book should be a top pick for any nutrition-conscious foodie.

Here nutritionist Grotto (101 Foods That Could Save Your Life) ranks foods by nutrional content; for example, the best source of Vitamin C is guavas, second best is sweet red peppers. He also discusses the value of supplements (far inferior to the food items) and warns of the dangers of excess, as well as the effects of deficiencies. VERDICT Comprehensive and fun for foodies, but will have limited appeal to those simply interested in losing weight.
