Award-winning author Chuck Greaves returns with the rollicking sequel to his acclaimed debut novel, Hush Money.

US Senate candidate Warren Burkett has a history of marital infidelity. Three weeks before Election Day, Burkett comes to the aid of a beautiful green-eyed lady, only to find himself alone and naked in a stranger's home from which a priceless painting is missing. As the resulting scandal threatens to tilt the election, the painting turns up in a most unexpected place—and so does a dead body.

Hired to defend Burkett and unravel the deepening mystery, Jack MacTaggart must traverse a minefield of ruthless politicians, felonious art dealers, swarming paparazzi, the amorous wife of Burkett's billionaire opponent, her mobbed-up brother, and a district attorney with an old score to settle.

With the electoral clock ticking and the press following his every move, Jack's investigation leads him on a roller-coaster ride through the lofty heights and gritty depths of Southern California, lending new meaning to the adage that all's fair in love and politics.

Political chicanery provides the backdrop for Greaves’s amusing sequel to Hush Money (2012), which introduced Pasadena, Calif., lawyer Jack MacTaggart. A clever setup involving a sexy redhead and an art theft lands former Los Angeles mayor Warren Burkett, a Democrat running for the U.S. Senate, in a scandal just weeks before the election. This crisis may be enough to erase Burkett’s poll lead and assure the victory of his Republican opponent, Larry Archer. Burkett hires MacTaggart, now the head of his own law firm, and partner Marta “Mayday” Suarez to undo the damage. As Burkett and Archer jockey for advantage, MacTaggart struggles with the machinations of Archer’s wife, a contemporary art museum trustee who “could have passed for one of the Real Housewives of New Jersey.” With a Senate seat at stake, it doesn’t take long for murder to enter the picture. Colorful characters, snappy dialogue, and some nifty twists lend credence to MacTaggart’s mantra: “Trust me, I’m a lawyer.” Agent: Antonella Iannarino, the David Black Literary Agency.

Attorney Jack MacTaggart is hired to represent a presidential candidate whose campaign is threatened by a shocking new scandal involving infidelity and stolen art. This is the premise of Greaves’s latest thriller, which is brought to life via a spirited reading from narrator Dan Butler. Butler’s MacTaggart is a stern, focused individual, but one who displays an inherent fallibility despite his expertise in the courtroom. Butler’s characterizations are understated, making them all the more realistic and immediate. The story itself could be ripped from the headlines, and Butler’s portrayal of the candidate is injected with a healthy dose of realism. The result a gripping mix of action and intrigue. A Minotaur hardcover.
