Heresy, murder, and the contents of a mysterious treasure chest challenge Brother Cadfael—12th-century herbalist, sleuth, and sometime cupid—in his 16th chronicle.

In the summer of 1143, William of Lythwood arrives at the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul, but it is not a joyous occasion—he's come back from his pilgrimage in a coffin. William's body is accompanied by his young attendant Elave, whose mission is to secure a burial place for his master on the abbey grounds. An already difficult task is complicated when Elave drunkenly expresses his heretical opinions, and capital charges are filed. When a violent death follows, Sheriff Hugh Beringar taps his friend Brother Cadfael for help.

The arrival of a pilgrim from the Holy Land at the Abbey of St. Peter & St. Paul sets in motion both romance and intrigue. Once again, Brother Cadfael sorts things out. No surprises here, except in the details. But readers/listeners who pick up the next in this long running series aren't looking for surprises; they're returning to the tried and true. They won't be disappointed. Peters and Cadfael remain at the height of their powers, as does Patrick Tull, whose rich, well-seasoned voice has arguably become definitive for this popular series. He gives warm life to a setting that may or may not be the authentic Middle Ages but is pleasantly long ago and far away. J.N. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
