The most authoritative account published to date on the history, spread, and chilling repercussions of one of the deadliest pandemics the world has ever seen.
Global AIDS Crisis scrutinizes the scourge of HIV and the AIDS virus throughout the world through the eyes of one of the top AIDS researchers in the world. From Botswana and sub-Saharan Africa to Thailand, Romania, and Brazil, an exploration of developing countries with limited access to healthcare and scarce resources reveals how such factors as tourism, international travel, war, and mobility have facilitated the insidious spread of HIV and AIDS.
Candid discussions of sensitive issues such as stigma and its effects on morale and health complement scientific and medical inquiries into the origins of the disease and the development of antiretroviral therapies. An analysis of groundbreaking solutions such as "medication adherence partners," prevention strategies, and current vaccine models adds a glimmer of hope to a seemingly hopeless crisis.

Gr 9 Up -Focusing on the worldwide scope of the crisis, this handbook examines a variety of aspects of AIDS in historical, contemporary, and future contexts. The volume includes a 40-page introduction that discusses HIV from its genetic, historical, and political perspectives. It is followed by a discussion of the continuing controversies surrounding the growth of the AIDS threat, highlighting the identifiable problems and suggested solutions offered by representatives from both public and private sectors. A 55-page chronology tracing the origin and growth of the HIV epidemic and AIDS begins in 1959 with a blood sample taken in what was then Zaire (now the Congo) that 27 years later tested positive for HIV and ends in 2003. One-page biographical profiles of 16 men and women who have made important contributions to the struggle against this pervasive health threat follow. Graphs and charts of statistics, maps, a short annotated directory of related organizations, and annotated lists of print and nonprint resources are appended. (Each chapter contains a separate list of references.) Some of the maps and graphs are not clearly printed. The narrative is straightforward, but it assumes some basic knowledge of AIDS and world conflicts. The statistics especially require previous familiarity with the topic and public health data. A useful resource for students doing research on the worldwide impact of AIDS." -Jack Forman, Mesa College Library, San Diego"
