Grad student and cocktail waitress Evelyn Merkholtz has plenty to deal with. Too much to deal with, actually. So when her runaway best friend calls with a mysterious and urgent request to join her in Scotland, she is secretly more than happy to drop everything and oblige.

When she gets there, Evelyn discovers that she is faced with an ancient curse, an adorably hunky villager, and a super hot (but possibly murderous) Highland warrior from the eighteenth century—and realizes that getting burned at the stake is a really bad way to get out of writing her thesis.

In a brassy voice, Angela Dawe performs this tale of time travel, romance, and magic, set in the Scottish Highlands. When grad student Evelyn Merkholtz's best friend, Piper, inherits a castle from her great-grandmother, the girls find that strange things happen there, specifically the appearance of a Celtic warrior named Lachlan, who has time-traveled from the past--1729 to be exact. Soon enough, Sam, local bookstore owner and steamy hunk, and Evelyn find themselves catapulted back to Lachlan's past. Dawe provides rich Scots brogues for Sam, Lachlan, and other male characters; Evelyn's and Piper's voices are lighter and sharper. Dawe's pacing speeds up during the emotional parts, her voice warming at the infrequent romantic scenes. But listeners may struggle to follow the time shifts of the plot.
