Since champagne is often reserved for special occasions, wine drinkers may not be as familiar with its varieties as they are with other wines. Journalist Liem, of Wine and Spirits magazine and founder of ChampagneGuide.net, draws upon his enjoyment of the drink and of his life in Champagne, France, to familiarize his audience with the sparkling beverage. In writing that pairs authoritative knowledge with an inviting tone, the author guides readers through the history of champagne, the process of producing the wine, the geography of the Champagne region, and the major manufacturers. A highlight of this last section is that, as much as possible, Liem puts the focus on the winemaker, adding a layer of personality to the various labels they work for. This book is not as comprehensive as Christie's World Encyclopedia of Champagne & Sparkling Wine, but it is also less intimidating for a novice champagne drinker to dive into and enjoy, featuring illustrations and pull-out maps. VERDICT An excellent starting point for those unfamiliar with bubbly. Recommended where titles on wine are popular.--Peter Hepburn, Coll. of the Canyons Lib., Santa Clarita, CA
