The Mercenary Librarians and the Silver Devils are back in The Devil You Know, the next installment of USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Kit Rocha's post-apocalyptic action/romance, with hints of Orphan Black and the Avengers
Maya has had a price on her head from the day she escaped the TechCorps. Genetically engineered for genius and trained for revolution, there's only one thing she can't do—forget.
Gray has finally broken free of the Protectorate, but he can't escape the time bomb in his head. His body is rejecting his modifications, and his months are numbered.
When Maya's team uncovers an operation trading in genetically enhanced children, she'll do anything to stop them. Even risk falling back into the hands of the TechCorps.
And Gray has found a purpose for his final days: keeping Maya safe.

The Mercenary Librarians, bioengineered supersoldiers and genetic geniuses who went rogue from the ubiquitous TechCorps (see Deal with the Devil, 2020), are surprised to find that the cargo they're seizing from a biotech company is a cloned child, and that there are more somewhere in Atlanta. Maya's beyond-eidetic memory is useful to the team and to their community, but it doesn't help her fighting skills. Until Gray, the sullen sharpshooter, trains her to use her sensory recall for kicking ass. Often overwhelmed by her senses, Maya has no problem being overwhelmed by Gray, but he's living on borrowed time, and the last thing he wants to do is leave the heart of their little mercenary family heartbroken. To get the full effect of the secondary plots and team in-fighting (which looks a lot like flirting), readers will want to start at the beginning of the series. This sequel has all of the action, smolder, snark, and surprising warmth of the first, with more development of a postapocalyptic Atlanta that is slowly finding its feet again--with the help of the Mercenary Librarians.

This follow-up to the post-apocalyptic Deal with the Devil focuses on Maya, part of the crew of Mercenary Librarians. She might not have the strength and speed of her comrades, but she did escape the genetic engineering of TechCorps and can remember everything she experiences through her senses; the sensory overload makes her life amazing at times and nearly unbearable at others. Now that the Mercenary Librarians are working with the Silver Devils, the former elite squad from the Protectorate, they are able to accomplish more than ever to help their piece of Atlanta survive. They discover that TechCorps is trading in genetically enhanced children, and Maya refuses to see another child suffer her own fate. Her counterpart is Gray, who knows that his time is waning and his neural implant is killing him; he vows to protect Maya for as long as he can. Yet even as their relationship heats up, they know it will eventually burn out and leave Maya's heart in ashes. Rocha (the pseudonym of co-authors Donna Herren and Bree Bridges, known for their "Beyond" series) plots this book with a slower pace than its predecessor, giving readers time to delve into more backstory and broadening the secondary cast into a found family. VERDICT This series entry begins to peel back the layers of the characters that make up the Mercenary Librarians and the Silver Devils, while giving hints to deeper secrets and conspiracies of the corrupt TechCorps and its plans for control.--Kristi Chadwick, Massachusetts Lib. Syst., Northampton
